Is the ‘add new plugins menu’ missing inside your WordPress admin area?

This week, I experienced an issue where I couldn’t add, install, delete or edit plugins. The entire menu had disappeared!

The add new plugins menu should be seen under the plugins tab, like this …

I will show you how to troubleshoot and fix it, what worked for me, in case you faced the same issue 🙂 The easiest solution is to watch the video above. However, if you prefer a text version, keep reading.

The problem I encountered was having “DISALLOW_FILE_MODS” set too true in my wpconfig.php file.

FIRST make sure that:

  1. The theme is not the problem: Activate another theme to check if your current theme is the problem.
  2. A plugin is not the problem: Try deactivating all plugins and check if the problem persists. If the problem is gone, then its a problem with one of your plugins. Try to activate plugins one by one and find which plugin is the culprit.
  3. You have admin access: check in Users tab to make sure that you are an admin.
  4. This is not a multisite site, that may be why you don’t have access.
